The first time, the Capella de Música de la Basílica Santa Maria del Pi
of Barcelona was mentioned in a written document, succeeded in the year
1632. It tells us about its contribution to the reception of the relics of
Sanct Isidor in the basilica. In this era the Capella already existed as an
established ensemble.
During the 17th century the Capella acquired great prestige in the
musical life of Barcelona, which persisted till the end of the 19th century.
From then on it began to cease, and ended with the disintegration of the
group in 1936.
Following an initiative of David Malet and Jordi Sacasas in 1994 it was
refounded. Until 2005 under the direction of Manuel Cabero the Capella
gained a profile as a chamber music ensemble at the highest stage, which
focused upon the interpretation of early music. Currently, the artistic
direction is carried out by Josep Martí i Montoliu.
Since its reappearance on the 3rd of December, 1994 the Capella
accompanies selected worship services with tailored concert programs of
ancient music, as well religious as profane.
As highlights of the repertoire there should be pointed out the Missa
quarti toni, the Passio secundum Johannem as well as further motets by Tomás
L. de Victoria, the Messa a quattro voci da capella of Claudio Monteverdi,
and songs, christmas songs and madrigals by Juan Vásquez. And as far as the
catalonian composers: the Magnificat de primer to by Joan Pau Pujol, the
Pleasures of Our Lady and the Madrigal de las Cañas by Joan Brudieu.
Recently the mass “vox clamantis in deserto” by the baroque composer of the
monastery Montserrat, Joan Cererols has been prepared.
In the course of this year a new participation project in liturgical
celebrations was brought into being. It contributes musically with the
previsted parts of the mass, and with the interpretation of optative
liturgical repertoire. Programs have been worked out for All Saints Day and
Corpus Christi.
Whenever possible the Capella performs a motet in the worship service in
the Capella de la Puríssima Sang, usually on Saturday morning.
As latest activities the second price on the International Choirfestival
in Malgrat de Mar should be mentioned, as well as the contribution in the
closing concert of the concert cycle “Maig Coral del Barcelonès” with the
Mass on the 4th tone as well as further motets of T.L. de Victoria. Last but
not least, the concert in Sindelfingen (Germany) as well as the XXII.
Festival of Ancient Music in Bunyola (Mallorca).
